What is GDL?

GDL is dedicated to protecting natural resources, including water, air, habitat, and native species.
The Gaia Defense League (GDL)is dedicated to protecting natural resources, including water, air, habitat, and native species. The organization lawfully monitors the activities of the environmentally regulated community and, when necessary, brings enforcement actions in the courts. Additionally, GDL promotes the education of the citizenry in the protection of natural resources and other civic interests such as assisting local governments on community building and sustainable development.

The Gaia Defense League formed in 2004. Although a number of other environmental groups already existed in the Erie, PA, area, including watershed organizations, land trusts, and environmental education programs, the need for the GDL arose from the reluctance of these groups to take decisive actions that are authorized under the law when dealing with environmental problems. Other groups were often unwilling to take such action because of conflicts arising from their organizational mission or purpose, or from fear of reprisals including, slander, counter legal suits, or the loss of funding.

The Gaia Defense League is newly incorporated and in the process of applying for 501 (c) 3 status.
